7 Fun Ways to Celebrate New Years at Home

7 Fun Ways to Celebrate New Years at Home Couple Featured ImageNew Year’s Eve always evokes images of people partying in the streets, at concerts and in all the best bars and nightclubs. Those types of events are fun for some people, but not everyone wants to ring in the New Year in this manner.

You can celebrate New Year’s Eve in the comfort of your own home in a way that better fits your style. Check out our ideas and have the time of your life!

1. The Introvert Who Doesn’t Want to Be Lonely

Don’t feel guilty about wanting to have a relatively quiet night at home. You probably have a few friends with a similar profile and you can invite them over for a smaller soirée. Plan a nice dinner and buy a few bottles of wine. Ask what others would like to do. They might enjoy having a Netflix marathon, playing games like Cards Against Humanity or just chatting through the night by the fire.

If you like partying but can’t afford to drop hundreds of dollars on a single night out, plan your own party at home – or at a friend’s house. Invite everyone you know and cut costs by asking people to chip in for food and drinks or to bring their own. Set up a playlist so you don’t have to worry about tunes and pick up a few New Year’s decorations or noisemakers at a discount store. Even condo living is great for entertaining ; you can make your space work for you!

3. The Couple with Young Kids

If you have young kids, you know how hard it can be to find a babysitter on New Year’s Eve. That’s OK. Change the clocks in your house so the kids can “stay up until midnight.” Countdown to midnight when it’s 9 pm and you’ll still have time for some romantic time together as midnight really approaches. Of course, you’ll probably sit down to a romantic movie, fall asleep halfway through and wake up with a crick in your neck at 2 am.

4. The Couple with Older Kids

All of your kids have plans to hang out with their friends. You look at each other with surprise as you realize you’re alone together on New Year’s Eve in an empty house for the first time in who knows how long. You could go out for some fun, but you could also open up that vintage bottle of champagne.

5. The Romantics

You two never have to really make plans. As long as you’re together, it’s bound to be the perfect evening. Still, there’s nothing wrong with going over the top when it comes to your sweetie. One of you should take the reins and plan something special. How about a home-cooked candlelight dinner followed by a bit of dancing in the living room? You might not be going out, but you can still dress up for your private affair.

6. The Dieter

If you’ve decided one of your resolutions is to stop eating junk food, you know the day is rapidly approaching. Fill the kitchen with samples of all the foods that won’t belong in your new lifestyle and make sure you get to savour those tastes the night before you start your healthier lifestyle. Whether you’re going to miss pizza, chips, or chocolate, it’s OK to indulge a bit on New Year’s Eve. Invite a like-minded friend or two over to hang out. Once it turns midnight, you have to throw all the leftover food into the garbage. No cheating.

7. The Go-Getter

If you dream about spreadsheets and to-do lists, you probably recognize the potential for transformation that comes with the New Year. Rather than partying with friends, you might want to spend some time reflecting on what you can do to make yourself a better person. You might want to get that big promotion, write your novel or to save for a down payment and finally purchase the home of your dreams. No matter what your goals are, spend New Year’s Eve planning to reach those goals. It may not seem like fun to other people, but you know how good it feels to have an actionable list that will get you from point A to point B.

New Year’s Eve offers a fun chance to celebrate the passage of time. It’s an opportunity to reflect on your life, to appreciate the things you have and the people in your life and to make some changes that will make your life better. Don’t let others tell you the best way to celebrate the day. Do whatever makes sense for you.
