If you’ve been thinking of buying a new Calgary condo or home, you already know you have countless options to choose from. From builders and developers to finishes, floor plans to upgrades, the choices are endless!

One of the best ways to narrow down your options and really get a feel for what’s on the market is to start visiting show homes. They give you a sense of a builder’s overall quality and an understanding of their style. This will help you decide whether or not they’ll be a good fit for your new home purchase.

That being said, there are a lot of myths among new home buyers when it comes to viewing show homes. Because these misconceptions can have a negative impact on your home hunting experience, here a few myths we’d like to bust before you head out.

4 Show Home Myths Debunked Looking at Details image1. You Have to Rush Through the Home

In a hot housing market like Calgary’s, there are many people who want to purchase new homes and condos. This means that show homes (or show suites) are often crowded with potential home buyers – making it feel as though you need to rush to get through the home and let other people through.

Don’t make this mistake! If you’re interested in a particular builder, this is your chance to explore all of the details. Instead of rushing through, you need to take your time (and even take notes) during the process. Many people learn valuable lessons during this stage of the buying process and this is a great opportunity for you to see what you like (and the things you aren’t a fan of) in the show home.

2. The Show Home Features are the Only Option

Perhaps the biggest mistake people make is they forget most builders offer options that let you personalize the models or suites to cater to your individual tastes and budget.

For this reason, when perusing the show home, it’s important to look at various features throughout the home and understand which finishes are standard and which are upgraded selections. When working with a quality builder, you’re sure to have many choices when it comes to the look and feel of your home or condo.

3. The Home is All That Matters

Your enjoyment of your new home is going to depend on many variables, and often home buyers forget to look beyond the four walls. When you venture out to look a show home, pay close attention to the surrounding areas. Are there services close by? Grocery stores? Parks and green spaces? Transit or commuter routes? If you have children, where are the nearest schools?

These are all things you’ll want to look for, either before or after your visit. Of course, once in the show home the representative will be able to give you all the details of the community – including what’s already around and what’s yet to come.

Another myth that many potential buyers believe is that floor plans are not flexible. Nothing could be further from the truth. What many don’t realize is a good builder/developer offers several floor plans developed from a keen understanding of what home buyers want.

When you’re visiting, talk to the area manager and tell them what you’re looking for. Tell them what you like about the floor plan and what design features you want. They’ll be more than happy to listen to your wants and needs to help you select the right floor plan that fits your lifestyle.

Everybody does online research; however, there is nothing like walking through a show home or show suite to get a feel for the home and the community.

Keep the above tips in mind when you head out for your next visit and you’ll not only ensure a better experience but increase your chances of finding your dream home that much sooner.
